About RAAWG - SZ1A
The Radio Amateur Association of West Greece (RAAWG) was founded in 1985. Our official callsign is SZ1A (ex. call SV1AFA). The main population center, where the most of our members are, is Agrinio, a town with a population of about 100,000. Our original goal was to unite all amateur radio operators in Western Greece, to maintain a network of repeaters in nearby mountains, to organize courses for candidate hams, to educate them and to offer as volunteers to our community. From the first days, some of our members were very active in contests. In 1993 we participated in our first CQ WW SSB as a club in the M/S category using the call SV1AFA. We came first place in Greece and this gave us a lot of pleasure! This first participation then drived our evolution and created a tradition. So eventually our club became the most active club in Greece in all major HF contests and remains very active in general.
Our current contest station was launched in 2009, the first dedicated Club Contest Station in Greece. This project was really special because our intention was not to make a station for our members but for everyone, and we succeeded! We offer this station to every fellow ham who wants to use it, and we want, in this way to make more hams to believe in contesting and the spirit of Amateur Radio. Besides the Contest Station SZ1A, we also maintain three voice repeaters, four APRS digipeaters and one HF station (in our office in Agrinio).
If you hear us on-air, especially during a contest, please give us a call! Every QSO with you is our pleasure!
